NaNo Begins and Your Favourite Authors
And I'm already falling behind. Really - I should have 450 words by now if I want to stay on pace for the 50,000. For the next month, you should probably expect this blog to be almost entirely about muddling my way through the event - but I'll try to spice things up with a little variety every so often.
One thing I won't have time for is the Read of the Week. Scouring the net for a really good SF story generally takes an hour or two of my time each week, and I'll need all the extra time I can get for writing. So, here's what I propose: I'd like everyone to leave a comment in this post telling me who they're top two or three favourite SF writers are. I'll take the four most popular and seek out some short works by them (it's not too hard, if you know where to look). So, who are your faves?
Now, I have to go dash off my opening scene before work.

One place I religiously stop by every day is 365 tomorrows. A new, short, sci-fi story every day. Even the worst ones are good, and the best ones are excellent.
Well worth a visit.
I wish you all the best.
I hope to hear of your classic novel at the end of the NaNo.
I'll be back for the 50,000 word relay, lol. Nice blog.
A couple of my favorite Sci Fiers are Neil Gaiman (who is more fantasy) and HP Lovecraft (more horror) and Robert Heinlin. Good Luck!! NaNo on!
Good luck with the NaNo. I just started today as well. Are you going to be doing a sci-fi piece?
Jules Verne: amazing imagination and ability to demonstrate that innovation does not eliminate basic human conflicts, grand or personal.
Kurt Vonnegut: while not a traditional sci-fi author, he weaves absurdities into themes of fantasy and science very well.
Thinking of Vonnegut makes me want to read the novel Dr. Strangelove is based on, Red Alert by Peter George.
Cavan, for some reason I had problems with your site (and others the past two days), I couldn't get into the comments. I started thinking there was a conspiracy against me - is there? You would tell me, wouldn't you?
;)
Anyways, some of my fave sci-fi authors: RJS, Robert Charles Wilson, Atwood and Kress.
50k is just an insane amount of words. I don't see how anyone with a job or in school can manage it.
I've only got 800 words so far and doubt I'll get past 20k in the month.
