Sex!

Really, though, I have more motivation than upping my search results - honest. Anyhow, I wanted to remark on the fact that, for the first time, implied sex has been making its way into my stories. It appears in "Between Eternities" and also in the first chapter of Glistening Edges and Right Angles.

Basically, I'm simply curious about people's reactions to this. Science fiction, as something of an inherently experimental genre which has never failed to push the boundaries, doesn't generally shy away from sex. However, it never seems to entirely embrace it, either (unless you're talking about a Capobianco/Barton novel, in which little else takes place aside from sex and sexual politics).

So, what do you think is the place of sex in SF?

(Brief post, I know - I'll expand with my thoughts tonight once I get home from school and check out the comments.)

I don't read Sci-fi but I'd be curious to see what others say about such an element having its general "place" in a genre. What should only matter is the direction the writer wishes to take the story, no?

There is an honest-to-goodness genre called "Science Fiction Romance." Seriously. I wouldn't read it if you paid me, but I know it exists! ;)

Any more, I think it is expected. For some reason it sells the book better than the plot or the writer's name. Personally, I think it takes away from the story. I have read what "jill" above me called Science Fiction Romance and it wasn't good or romantic it was like the "metal" cartoons that used to me on HBO late at night.

It's a tricky one that since different people have different conceptions of what sex should be like. What the author may consider scintillating, the reader may consider utterly tasteless.

I'm of the opinion that there many other creative ways to convey the same things that sex would, and thus it never enters anything I do (especially sci-fi, where it just doesn't belong largely due to the incompatability of the characters involved, where straying into obscenity is easy if one isn't careful).

Yeah, well, you know I read SF and I wouldn't have a problem with more sex.
I also write with quite a bit of sex scenes (for sci-fi that is), quite explicit too.
My sex scenes were always received very well, probably my best writing.
I'm considering a move into erotica. No, not really, (that last sentence that is, the rest is true).

Sci-fi is 'space porn' anyway, so of course sex belongs in it ;-)

Actually I don't like anything explicit. My own mind does a far better job. But implied sex is fine. It is what people do, so why not write about it?

Ah, great topic! Noticed you're a writer, than the entry on sex...great combination. ;) And it's great to see a person brave enough to combine the two.

I'm a fan of sci fi, the nice, traditional, Asimov stuff, and like to see author's brave sex as a natural part of life in their storylines as well. I've also wondered why there isn't more sex in sci-fi, but maybe what traditional fans of the genre are usually looking for isn't part of sex? Though, who would complain at getting a little of both? Or maybe the writers comfortable with the technical and introspective side of life aren't so comfortable with explicit physical detail.

Would love to see your thoughts on the topic! And I love a good discussion; I'll be back to read more.
